English Translated Version:
As a student, I had the opportunity to interview several migrant workers who have lived in Guangzhou's urban villages for many years. Through my conversations with them, I gained a more direct understanding of life in these urban villages and also developed a deeper perspective on the complex issues arising from China's urbanization process.
One of the migrant workers I interviewed shared that he came to Guangzhou from his rural hometown back in 2008. At first, he lived in an old urban village. Although the living conditions were tough, he felt that the area was full of hope and determination. He said, "I worked hard during the day on construction sites, and at night, I returned to these narrow, dilapidated streets. Even though the environment was bad, the air was stuffy, and the streets were covered in dust, this place was where all the migrant workers like me found a home."
However, over time, the urban villages in Guangzhou began to change. Starting around 2010, the government increased the pace of urban village renovations, and many old houses were demolished to make way for new high-rise buildings. He said, "Every time I heard about a demolition, I felt a mix of anticipation and worry. While these changes brought better opportunities, for ordinary workers like us, the rising rent and unstable jobs made life more difficult."
The worker told me that the low rent in the urban villages had attracted many migrant workers, allowing them to settle in the city. However, with the accelerating urbanization process and the government's ongoing renovation efforts, many of the old houses were replaced with new, modern buildings. While these renovations made previously “dirty and chaotic” areas look new, it also meant that people who had once been able to afford these low rents were now unable to keep up with the higher prices. This made life even more difficult for many.
I noticed that a common complaint among the migrant workers was that, while the new buildings and improved infrastructure made the city look more beautiful, their living conditions had become harder. Many could no longer afford the high rents in the newly constructed buildings. As they told me, on one hand, the waves of urbanization brought better opportunities, but on the other hand, they were losing the affordable housing that once gave them a foothold in the city, which added more financial strain to their lives.
During the interview, I heard the migrant workers express their worries and hopes for the future. Despite their optimism, they faced many challenges. In this rapidly developing city, they seemed to be forever chasing opportunities while struggling to break free from the harsh realities of life.
I suddenly realized that the urbanization process brings more than just changes to the city's appearance; it also changes the living conditions of thousands of migrant workers. Their living spaces are being constantly compressed, and the tension between urban development and personal fate is becoming more and more apparent. As the migrant worker summed up at the end of our conversation: "City development has indeed brought more opportunities, but for people like us struggling at the bottom, behind these renovations lie more challenges."
